VirginAtlantic-09.jpgThe TED conference draws extraordinary people and showcases them all the time. Richard Branson is one of those rare individuals who was interviewed (others give speeches). He truly personifies leadership and does it so naturally. You have to see this.

For him, leadership is all about

  • Finding the right people
  • Inspiring those people
  • Drawing out the best in them

He just says it, which indicates that he lives it. He walked the walk before he could talk the talk, I imagine.

And then the personal qualities that make him a leader:

  • I love learning
  • I love taking on the status quo and turning it up side down
  • I have seen life as one long learning process
  • When I fly on someone’s airline and the experience isn’t a pleasant one, maybe I can create an airline that is a pleasure to fly on. (I actually had a bad experience, but I won’t whine about that now). He bought one second hand Boeing 747 and gave it a go.

How do you come to success in business?

I don’t actually think that the stereotype of treading over people actually works. If you treat people well, people will come and will come back for more. All that you have in life is your reputation. And it’s a very small world. And I think, the best way of becoming a successful business leader is by dealing with people fairly and well, and I like to think that that is how we run Virgin.

Paraphrase:

Capitalism works, but the problem with capitalism is that extreme wealth ends up in the hands of a few people and with that extreme responsibility.

On and on he goes. Watch it, listen, marvel.

I love that he laughs all the time. He endears me that way. And he is certainly not afraid to make fun of himself.

When you bring up kids, you want to shower them with love and praise. You can’t cuddle your kids too much.
