Ken Blanchard writes in Forbes magazine about Why We Can-—And Should—Teach Leadership. It is an important article about possible best practices of EMBA programs. I want to highlight the following three pieces:

  1. Leadership is highly personal.
Successful EMBA programs begin with lessons on self-leadership. Once students understand themselves and develop their own leadership point of view, the next phase of their transformational journey should be leading others.

  2. Leadership is best learned in real world practice. The Gestalt psychologists pointed out that you cannot get to know yourself on an uninhabited island. So too, the leader must first know herself and then develop a personal leadership style in practice.
  3. Coaching is critical.
But EMBAs cannot teach how to effectively implement what students learn. That has to be done on the job, and requires coaching and continuous support. Unfortunately, students receive little, if any, leadership training on the job. To help bridge this gap, EMBAs should assign students a coach they can reach by phone.

I cannot emphasize this first point enough. A real leader is someone who knows himself and what he is about.
