Don’t give in.
Don’t read the San Francisco Chronicle and get depressed. Too much depends on you and you have to be courageous, keep the faith and spread hope. You just don’t have a choice.
Yes, I am talking to all of you who are working for a nonprofit. The Chronicle suggests that 2010 is going to be even harder than 2009, in particular in the Bay Area—which has the highest concentration of nonprofits in the country. But you cannot give in and let this drag you down. Make up your mind right now and refuse to give in.
Tom Suddes suggests rightly that you stop reading the news. He started out in a major economic decline and was extremely successful, because his drive to make an impact was greater than the circumstances.
I was 26, naïve, passionate… and didn’t even realize we were in a bad economy/recession. We just kept focused, made our visits, kept selling. We raised $180 Million, $50 Million over goal.
You too must remain “young, naïve, passionate… and CLUELESS!”
- Every day focus on the impact that you are making.
- Gather stories of all the people you have helped, all the lives you saved.
- Tell these stories to your donors. They will agree that what you do is incredibly important and dig deeper.
- Go online. It appears that online donations are actually up.
